Please be advised that based on delays in grant funding beyond our control, VVF is prioritizing awards pursuant to Va. Code § 19.2-368.11:1 (A), (B), and (D). Virginia law distinguishes between expenses that are mandatory and discretionary. Wage loss awards are mandatory expenses and all other expenses, such as funeral related costs, medical bills, and mental health bills, are discretionary. Therefore, the reimbursement of discretionary expenses is contingent upon available funding.

VVF is prioritizing awards for lost wages when victims are unable to return to work and for loss of support for dependents of homicide victims.

Secondary priorities are for awards to claimants with out-of-pocket expenses. All other potential awards are contingent upon available funding.

We encourage victims to continue applying for benefits; however, claimants and service providers should manage expectations about when awards will be made.

Note: All eligible homicide claims filed before August 15, 2025, will be processed and awarded as normal.
